Here is my first ever video journal from one of the early days of chemotherapy where I used my main positive mantra to affirm positively to my subconscious mind, while also helping me reduce the anxiety I was feeling. I used this mantra throughout my cancer journey and always encouraged my tribe to focus on this picture! You can create powerful mantras too and they will help you and your tribe be intentional with the way that you speak about your life. We all have bad days and going through cancer means that having a bad day is practically a given. Own these moments and know that you are allowed to have as many bad days as you desire. I also want you to know that you have the power to shift things in those moments too; and sometimes a good laugh and smile can make a big impact. When you laugh and smile, you release endorphins and reduce the stress hormone cortisol which makes you feel happier and less stressed. Said another way, simply being able to bring a smile to your face or having a funny thought and a laugh will help you reduce stress and increase your happiness. Give this a try the next time you could use a positive shift in your day. I think it is important for you to find as many opportunities to laugh and smile as you can (even if it’s about a new bald spot on our heads!). I love to celebrate life…and the end to the combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy that I went through. Your life is to be celebrated! Seriously, life can be stressful, and some days are just not easy. When you find yourself having one of these days, or even just one of these moments, take a few moments to celebrate being alive to experience it (that whole gratitude thing again). The video below was recorded the night before I wrote the blog post above and I included it so that you can really see that the way I was communicating publicly on the blog, and privately with myself, were in sync. In the video I acknowledge that “I am a little nervous” and then verbally affirm that I have “been envisioning myself waking up tomorrow feeling good” followed by my main positive mantra while I take the dose of chemo. This is a great example of honoring what you are experiencing and also using your positive thoughts, words and visualizations to improve your experience-in this case honoring that I was nervous and affirming that I would get restful sleep and wake up feeling good. Consistency is very important and when you form habits around this type of positive thinking and speaking you will notice a shift in every area of your life. Are you ready to create your own morning kickstart or daily self-love routine? This can start with one thing and grow as large as you want it to. Seriously, if this seems like a lot to you, pick one thing that resonates with you and start there. Most importantly there is zero pressure to be perfect…zero pressure. I am told it takes at least 21 days to form a habit so how about a 21-day kickstart challenge? Create your own kickstart list (and remember it can be a list of one) and make a commitment to yourself to do this for 21 days. I suggest that you start small with one or two things you want to include on your list. Some ideas to get you started are: exercise for 10 minutes, read one page of a book, sit quietly for 1 minute every morning to think about things you are grateful for, eat a healthy breakfast, etc. Think about the habits you currently have, habits you have thought about creating in your life, and perhaps some of the new tools you have learned in this book. Now text, call or email a few friends about your new commitment, because we all need accountability partners! Honoring where we are, despite how much we may want to be elsewhere, is powerful! This can mean that you notice yourself in a less than positive pattern, or perhaps one starting to creep back in your lives. You can be honest with yourself about the great times, sure that is easy. But, how about when things don’t go the way you had hoped…those times when you screwed up or perhaps disappointed yourself or someone you love? Those are the times that I think you should be extra aware of where you are, truly honor that place as you celebrate your self-awareness and then lovingly bring yourself back to your center, on the way to your best self. I know that this is something that I still focus on today and I hope that when you find yourself in a similar place, you are able to honor the moment, love yourself fully and lovingly come home to your center…the place where you feel safe, comforted and supported…on your way to your best self! As I hope you can tell by this point, consistency is a big part of what makes all of this powerful. My last chemo treatment was actually the best of all of them because of the endorphins and emotional highs I was on…I AM ALMOST DONE is a likely good theme for that last week of chemo.
